The Chasm of Esparros

An exceptional geological site

Exceptional site for the variety and profusion of its concretions, in particular with aragonite (real rock crystal), the Gouffre d’Esparros is a real underground garden to be discovered during a visit with sound and lights. Located in the preserved valley of the Baronnies, it is one of the most beautiful chasms to visit, it has been the subject of an eco-development taking into account the real fragility of this underground environment.

Legend has it that the original entrance to the Chasm was discovered by a shepherdess who had lost a lamb that had fallen down in a natural well. As a matter of fact, it is Norbert Casteret who, on June 25, 1938, after seven years of research, entered this underground passage for the first time with his companion Germain Gattet. Norbert Casteret spent many hours, many days exploring the entire network in every detail.

In July 1983, the Minister in charge of the Environment added the Gouffre d’Esparros on the list of the 12 most beautiful French cavities to be protected in priority for its exceptional heritage. The site was classified on the 30th October 1987 and opened to the public in 1997.

Discovering the Gouffre d’Esparros is organized around a guided tour in complete safety in «a luminous bubble» restoring the natural colours, highlighting the crystals, concretions and aragonite flowers in the vast galleries sculpted and hollowed out by water.
