Abbey, chapels and altarpieces

The most iconic of them all has to be the Cistercian Abbey of Escaladieu, a remarkable medieval example of religious art and architecture. But there are numerous other chapels and oratories scattered across the region’s hamlets and in the villages. In Nouillan (Montoussé village), a chapel stands on the spot where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared in 1848. Since then it has been a place of worship. Baroque art occupies a significant place, with a number of altarpieces listed as Historical Monuments: Saint Arroman, Esparros and Avezac. There are also multiple churches to visit, such as Galan, Libaros and the monumental church of Galan. (Heritage discovery walks are organised in summer.)
